Some breweries celebrate Halloween in October. Portland's Wayfinder Beer apparently celebrates it 365 days a year, occasionally pausing the occult rituals to brew spectacular lagers. Friday's Wayfinder Flight at Peaks & Pints summons five delicious disturbances: Jaws of Damnation Japanese Rice Lager, Harvest Moon Pilsner, Satanic Panic French Kellerbier, Terrifica Italian Horror Pilsner and Spellbound West Coast IPA. The Daily Outside Friday: Dog Days, Walk Dune Peninsula
Friday’s Daily Outside begins with dogs invading the zoo, proceeds along Tacoma’s waterfront toward a landscape worthy of science fiction, interrupts the afternoon for a marine feeding frenzy and eventually vanishes into an Eatonville forest where wolves, owls, enormous wooden trolls and sugar-fueled children are conducting Halloween negotiations of questionable legality. Four adventures, several species, approximately 47 opportunities for existential confusion and absolutely no guarantee that the humans will emerge as the most intelligent participants. The Daily Outside Thursday: Explore the Estuary, McDermott Point
Thursday’s Daily Outside begins with suspicious binocular activity in Belfair, wanders beneath Wright Park’s botanical aristocracy, puts the human sensory apparatus through a Nisqually estuary inspection, heads to the Key Peninsula to help resurrect a salmon lagoon buried by a spectacularly misguided development scheme and finishes with Tacoma runners voluntarily exercising before returning to a historic pizza joint. Five adventures involving birds, trees, tidal mud, ecological redemption and the persistent human belief that all roads should eventually lead to carbohydrates. Peaks & Pints Turns 10: Tacoma, Pull Up a Chair
Ten years ago, three lifelong Tacomans opened a craft beer lodge in Tacoma's Proctor District with a 600-pound Western red cedar tap log, a cooler the size of a respectable urban apartment, a kitchen roughly the dimensions of a Hobbit's pantry and the mildly deranged belief that people might enjoy drinking extraordinary beer and cider, eating excellent sandwiches and spending time together beneath a ceiling once belonging to a 1923 movie theater.
